Jim Vander Lind, a woodturner since 1994, produces turned works of art that include spindle turning and open and closed vessels. He uses both domestic woods from North America and exotic woods from around the world. His turnings frequently incorporate the use of rare woods and turquoise as accents. His work been displayed at various exhibitions, in art galleries, and is sold widely through art shows. He has been represented by Color Connection Gallery in Tulsa, J. Carole Gallery in Taos, New Mexico, and is currently represented by Lovett’s Gallery in Tulsa. His exhibitions include Philbrook Museum of Art, Alexander Hogue Gallery, and the South Texas Institute for the Arts. A photograph of his work appeared in Wood Magazine, the world’s leading woodworking journal. He is an active member of the American Association of Woodturners and is the past president of the Northeastern Oklahoma Woodturners Association.

Jim’s goal in woodturning is to uncover the natural beauty that lies beneath the bark of a log and to create a shape that is both an artistic expression and pleasing to the eye. He uses a clear lacquer on nearly all of his work so the true, natural color of the wood is highlighted.

Jim retired from The University of Tulsa on June 1, 2005, following 37 years of employment with TU. He served as Dean of Students for 27 years and Dean of University and Community Service for 10 years. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Hope College, a master of arts degree from Michigan State University, and a Ph. D. from Ohio University. He is now engaged in woodturning on a fulltime basis.
